I mean – I loved each single one of her jokes that night!
I also remember thinking how brave and smart a woman should (needs) to be, to be able to unveil her story with irony and empathy. Christina goes straight to the point: no frills, just sharp, smart and super-fun jokes for men and women to laugh and think about.
Here I am with my third interview to one of the “Cabarazze” star: Christina Pecora!
Enjoy the read and her unique way of being an American comedian in Italy!
WHO IS CHRISTINA PECORA?
I was born in the U.S.A. and then moved to Italy at the age of 23, after graduating from an American University. I graduated from the University of Siena in Foreign Languages and Literature, and began working as an English teacher. I became interested in performing when a theatre company in Siena, contacted me to perform in one of their comedies.
After living eight years in Siena, I moved to Milan for work, and I decided to enroll in a stand-up comedy course at l’Accademia del Comico, where I met my current boyfriend, who continues do stand-up as well.
WHEN DID YOUR PASSION FOR STAND-UP COMEDY START?
I’ve always been fascinated by it and enjoyed watching stand-up comedy, but I began to become interested in doing it only 3 years ago.
I NOTICED THAT MANY PIECES FROM FEMALE COMEDIANS (COMPARED TO MALE PIECES) INVOLVE SELF-PERCEPTION, SOME DOSE OF SELF-IRONY FAVOURING BODY-POSITIVITY. WHY DO YOU THINK IS THAT?
I think that female comedians feel more the need to be self-deprecating, about their bodies, in the world we live in. We women comedians want to spread a more positive image about our bodies.
Christina’s portrait, she is a white woman smiling at the camera with her blue eyes wide open and a beautiful smile! She has long blonde hair and is wearing a silk white top and white blazer. the silk v-neck top has a thin laces hem.
WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR BODY AND WHAT ARE THE FASHION AND BEAUTY BRANDS THAT YOU FEEL ARE JUST MADE FOR YOU?
Right now, I am a lot heavier than I usually am, around 40 to 50 kilos heavier. I have to say that I sort of feel like a stranger in my own body. I’m trying to accept my body as it is right now, but it isn’t easy. Currently, I ‘m interested in sustainable fashion brands: Zalando has a good and accessibile selection, while beautiful sustainable fashion is still too expensive offline. I like natural beauty brands, like Bottega Verde: I am though still looking for the right product that does not make me sweat off the make up, in less than an hour, after making myself up.
Christina on stage, wearing a red sleeveless v-neck dress. She is probably asking everybody’s attention on a specific thing she is saying. Her expression is like “And here is what happened!”
WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST SHOW YOU PERFORMED IN?
I think all the shows I’ve performed in have been great, because they’ve all helped me to evolve as a person.
WHAT IS YOUR EMPOWERING OUTFIT ON STAGE?
Oh… red on stage makes me feel powerful and confident… even when I do not really feel like that, it is a real boost!
WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE TO THE ENTERTAINMENT AND FASHION INDUSTRY?
I think the Fashion Industry should have collections in more plus sizes and the Entertainment Industry should have more representation of plus size women in their shows and films.
FUTURE PLANS?
Oh com’on… I don’t even know what I’m doing tomorrow morning!
[I can imagine her laughing freely while she answers!!!]
